About the TIES Project
\\ TIES OBJECTIVES
Objectives designed to deliver transformation
Strategic Objective 1
To develop and implement a methodology to increase the Societal Readiness of the innovations and approaches through stakeholder engagement.
Strategic Objective 2
To improve flexibility and performance of next generation hydropower through novel turbine design and water management.
Strategic Objective 3
To improve climate change resilience of next generation hydropower equipment through sediment management and erosion resilience.
Strategic Objective 4
To ensure environmental improvement of next generation hydropower through management of biodiversity, hydropeaking, and sediments.
Strategic Objective 5
To advance hydropower digitalisation through cloud infrastructure, AI tools, data integration and analysis, and a visual scenario dashboard.
Strategic Objective 6
To validate the sustainability of the developed solutions in relevant scenarios through four meaningful European case studies.
Strategic Objective 7
To provide an overview of the technical, environmental, and societal benefits of TIES innovation, with a roadmap and guidelines towards scale-up.
\\ CORE Project
TIES Structured Technical Work Packages
Work Package 1 (Lead: UNITO)
Societal Readiness
To inolve stakeholders and societal actors in the co-creation and refinement of the innovation process to ensure future societal readiness.
Work Package 2 (Lead: TU Wien)
Data Architecture
To establish a secure cloud infrastructure for data storage, integration and exchange. And to develop AI-supported, automatic data quality evaluation criteria.
Work Package 3 (Lead: UL)
Identification of Cross Domain Metrics
To select key parameters then design comparison and evaluation tools to analyse harmonized data based on specific use-cases and record new insights.
Work Package 4 (Lead: TU Wien)
Smart Sustainability Management Board
To develop a visual dashboard, to validate digital level images in real operating environment, and AI-based surrogate models.
Work Package 5 (Lead: EPFL)
Numerical and Data-driven Modelling
To create a range of tools and datasets for water inflows, biodiversity assessment, sediment dynamics, turbine erosion, and flexible operating regimes.
Work Package 6 (Lead: GEV)
Innovative Equipment
To develop innovative equipment to improve flexibility, aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem health, and resistance of turbines to various flow conditions, in particular cavitation and sediment erosion.
Work Package 7 (Lead: IST-ID)
Sustainability of Solutions
To convert the technical advances of Work Packages 5 and 6 into a three-pillar sustainability proposition: environmental, economic, and social.
Work Package 8 (Lead: EDP-RD)
Global Impacts & Deployment
To translate the key findings and results of the previous Work Packages into operator/stakeholder ready replication guidelines and a scale-up roadmap.
